CHANDIGARH: Facing monkey menace for years, a committee at Panjab University has recommended adding an insurance cover worth Rs 50,000 for students in case of monkey bites. The insurance cover will also include snake and dog bites.

The university insures the students for one year at nominal costs and provides a cover of Rs 2 lakh in case of accidental deaths.

It also provides a reimbursement fee of remaining semesters up to Rs 1 lakh in case of death of an earning parent or guardian of a student.

From this year, an additional Rs 50,000 insurance cover has also been proposed in case of animal bites, specifically monkeys, dogs and snakes - all of which are in abundance on the campus. Recently, a monkey had bitten a girl student outside the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) on the PU campus in Sector 14. The student had suffered injuries on the leg, and was administered anti-rabies vaccine at a dispensary.

Not long before that, a professor was also bitten by a monkey while a peon was attacked.
