Children in government home get health insurance cover

MADURAI: Orphan and semi-orphan girl children staying at the Annai Sathya government home received health cover under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme on Saturday. All the 27 children staying in the home were issued the cover following the intervention of the child welfare committee (CWC) and district child protection unit (DCPU).

Through this, their family members too will be automatically covered under the scheme. The children were issued the covers in the presence of the district child protection officer Ganesan and child welfare committee members B Pandiaraja and L Shanmugam.

According to officials there are 48 children homes in Madurai district including two adoption homes and one reception home. Children staying in all homes except for adoption and reception homes will be issued the health insurance cover in the days to come.

Meanwhile, chairman of CWC, Dr Vijaya Saravanan has taken steps to get Aadhaar card for these children. He has issued letters to 15 orphan children certifying them and their address to enable them to get Aadhaar. These children could not get Aadhaar as they do not have documents required to show their address. According to the chairman, efforts will be taken to get Aadhar for children in all the 48 homes in three months’ time.
