Bizman killed beggar to fake own death, claim insurance money: Police

Tarn Taran: Police here have revealed that an Amritsar-based businessman faked his death by allegedly setting ablaze a beggar to claim insurance money. “During investigation, we got suspicious and were of the view that the charred body was not of businessman Anoop Singh, but we are still investigating,” superintendent of police Jagjit Singh Walia said on Friday.

Tarn Taran police had on Thursday recovered a burnt body of a person near Boo Havelian village on Patti-Harike road. Following recovery of documents from the vehicle, the deceased was identified as Anoop Singh (27), resident of Waheguru City, Jhabhal Road, Amritsar. A source said Anoop’s father Tarlok Singh had claimed that his son left for Delhi on Wednesday, but didn’t respond when he called him the next day over his phone.

Following the incident, police registered a FIR against unidentified persons under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the IPC and started an investigation.

The source said police came to know that the charred body was of a beggar whom Anoop had brought along with him from Amritsar. Border range inspector general of police (IG) S P S Parmar confirmed that the accused had allegedly killed the beggar. “We have detained his brother and Anoop will be arrested soon,” he said.

Sources informed that Anoop’s location was traced somewhere in Haryana and he was being chased by police. His family was preparing for his and his sister’s weddings in January. Sources said the family was in debt and wanted to collect insurance money by faking Anoop’s death.
