Accident victim's kin awarded Rs 15 lakh

CHANDIGARH: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) awarded compensation of Rs 15 lakh to five children of a resident of Indira Colony, Panchkula, who had died in a road accident in 2018.

Accident victim Ram Saran’s children — Satish Prajapati (24), Vinod (22), Renu (18), Senu (16) and Ankush (5) — had filed a complaint against Simi Jaggi of Zirakpur and insurer of the car — M/s National Insurance Company Ltd — under Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act, seeking compensation, on account of the death of their father due to Jaggi’s car.

As per the petition, on October 22, 2018, Saran was on his tricycle cart and when he reached ahead of the petrol pump in Sector 26, Chandigarh, he met with an accident. It was mentioned that he was on his correct left side, when Jaggi’s car came speeding from behind and hit the rehri, killing Saran. The petition stated that Saran was 45 years old and was earning Rs15,000 per month. Claiming that they were solely dependent upon him, the children claimed Rs 25 lakh compensation.

After the arguments, MACT awarded compensation to them. The order read, “An amount of Rs 14, 59,448 is hereby awarded in equal shares in favour of claimants/petitioners, who shall also be entitled to interest @ 9.0% per annum from the date of filing of petition till the actual realization.”
