Chandigarh MC panel to put up another recommendation
CHANDIGARH: On the long-pending insurance cover for the city's firemen, the fire and emergency services committee of the municipal corporation recommends putting this item on the agenda for the general house meeting. The matter of insurance cover is under consideration for many years but has not matured after multiple discussions and deliberations. An MC official said: “A few years ago, some insurance companies visited the city with cover plans for the firemen but the quoted price was too much, and so the matter has lingered on.”
The civic body has 225 firemen, all trained under the laid down guidelines and rules. Some of them even do administrative duties but act as main firemen during the crisis. They know how to control any kind of blaze. Besides insurance for the firemen, the agenda items that the committee wants to push include communication. The committee has asked the employees concerned to prepare communication system specifications, which it will ask the general house to approve. These systems will be introduced in the fire and rescue services department.
While the Chandigarh MC has not finalized buying insurance for its firemen, the municipal corporations of neighbouring Mohali and Panchkula give full cover to their firefighters, for which both bodies set aside a specific amount each year.
