Hong Kong:Travel insurance policy to include COVID-19 testing as add-on

Seeking to alleviate COVID-19 fears of Hong Kong-based travellers, Avo Insurance has introduced new travel protection plans for those who need to travel to mainland China.

The new insurance plans – ‘GBA Travel Protection’ and ‘China Travel Protection’ – provides coverage on accident, emergency medical and related services during the trip with policy premiums starting at HKD8 ($1) and HKD36 respectively.

According to Avo Insurance executive director and CEO Winnie Wong, the insurer has also introduced optional services to its new travel protection plans in response to current travel norms. This will allow policyholders to customise coverage in accordance to their needs.

Policyholders of the new insurance plans are therefore eligible to add extra benefits including a COVID-19 real-time PCR test which is offered by CUHK Medical Clinic (CU Clinic) and supplemented by Avo’s complimentary add-on benefit ‘Coronavirus Disease Protection’. The optional benefits will cost a total of HKD950. Policyholders opting for the optional benefits are required to arrange an appointment with CU Clinic for a PCR test before departure. The test report will be delivered by a local COVID-19 testing institutions recognised by the HKSAR government after one to two working days from the specimen submission date.

In the event that the policyholder tests positive for COVID-19, they can redeem hospital cash of HKD10,000 during the 30-day coverage period of ‘Coronavirus Disease Protection’ starting from the departure date.

“We hope to provide security to travellers, especially those who must visit mainland China for work or emergencies, and allow them to travel with peace of mind. Being the first virtual general insurer in Hong Kong, Avo will continue to monitor the changing developments of COVID-19 and provide insurance protection to support the recovery of the travel sector and other industries,” said Ms Wong.
