Schoolteachers demand health insurance, oppose regular duty
Teachers’ groups are seeking protection in the course of returning to school amidst the pandemic. Some are demanding that the state foot the bills for Covid-19 treatment incurred by those in government and aided schools while others are urging that teachers be called in only when “necessary”.
In a letter to the education department, a BJP-affiliated teachers group has asked that teachers be included among staff eligible for insurance. “Several teachers going to schools are catching Covid. But there aren’t beds available in government hospitals, which forces teachers to take treatment in private hospitals,” said Anil Bornare, the group’s coordinator. Teachers have been assigned Covid-19 related duties as well, he said.
Shikshak Parishad, a teachers’ body, has asked that the education department intervene and advise schools not to call in teachers regularly. Some states have reopened schools this week.
