Medical insurance for all players in IFA Shield

KOLKATA: The Indian Football Association has decided to have medical insurance of Rs 3 lakh each for every player and member of the coaching staff who will be taking part in the upcoming 123rd edition of the IFA Shield. This was decided at a meeting on Saturday.

At the same time, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being formulated for the tournament which all teams will have to abide by. "We are taking all steps to ensure the safety of the players. That is a primary concern for us," said Indian Football Association secretary Joydeep Mukherjee.

There will be sanitisation tunnels at the stadiums and players will undergo thermal scanning before their entry into the stadium. All teams will have to submit Covid-19 negative reports of the players two days before their first match while IFA will subsequently carry out tests regularly.

Mukherjee further informed that Real Kashmir will be taking part in the tournament instead of Sudeva Delhi FC. Real Kashmir will be in Group B along with Peerless Sports Club and Aryan Club. A total of 12 teams will be taking part in the tournament that will be played from December 6 to 19. The teams will be divided into four groups with the top-two teams progressing to the quarterfinals.

There will be a man-of-the-match trophy for every league game while the trophy will be accompanied by a cash prize of Rs 5000 from the quarterfinal stage. There will also be a fair play trophy for the tournament.

The Indian Football Association had earlier informed that the award for the best coach and best player of the tournament will be named after PK Banerjee and Chuni Goswami, respectively. The two legends of Indian football passed away earlier this year.
