Gujarat man lies about previous life policy, widow loses Rs 6.6 lakh insurance money
AHMEDABAD: Planning to take a life insurance policy? Then, do not lie while getting one.
A man’s decision to hide information about his previous insurance policy proved costly for his widow when the Gujarat State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission quashed a consumer forum order directing the insurance firm to pay Rs 6.62 lakh to Minaben Minekar on the death of her 42-year-old, husband Rakesh.
The payment order was quashed because IDBI Federal Life Insurance Co Ltd established that Rakesh had another policy of Rs 7 lakh from Aviva Life Insurance Co Ltd that he had not revealed while availing himself of its policy.
The commission cited a national commission’s order in this regard that such information should not be hidden by the policy holder while opting for a policy cover.
Minekar obtained the 30-year life cover in 2011. However, he passed away the next month. The insurance company refused the claim by the widow on the ground that Minekar already held an insurance policy and had lied about it.
