Gang offered dozens fake insurance; 2 arrested

Ghaziabad: The cyber cell of Ghaziabad police busted a gang of fraudsters and arrested two people for defrauding people in the name of insurance policy. However, three members of the gang, including the mastermind, are absconding.

The accused would first win the trust of the people by giving gifts and then carry out the fraud by offering them insurance policies.

Police said the accused were arrested for cheating Jamal Qureshi, a resident of Sanjay Nagar, of Rs 20 lakh last year. Following Qureshi’s complaint on March 9, the cyber cell arrested them from old bus stand late on Saturday. The accused have been identified as Deshraj, a resident of Bada Hindu Rao, and Kamal Singh, a resident of Nainital. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they have committed such frauds with more than two dozen people so far.

Sumit Kumar, in-charge of cyber cell, said that Qureshi made two insurance policies from the accused in July last year “The accused then gifted him a gold chain to gain his confidence. The accused approached Qureshi again in December 2020 and convinced him to get a third policy. They then took six blank cheques from Qureshi to pay the premiums. A week later, the victim got to know that Rs 20.17 lakh was withdrawn,” Kumar said.
