Lloyd’s to enact more ‘Zoom-friendly’ dress code upon underwriting room reopening
Currently men are expected to wear a suit, or jacket with trousers and ties, and women should dress in a smart business style.
The new dress code is still being formulated but sources told this publication that sweatpants could potentially be an option as people have got used to wearing informal lower wear during the pandemic.
Sources added that informal bottoms would be tolerated but market participants should still look smart on the torso, as has become tradition during the lockdown. Some items that are understood to be under consideration include leggings, yoga pants and shorts.
Lloyd’s CEO John Neal said that the decision came following feedback from market participants which outlined hesitation at returning to an office in formal wear when one could just stay in their pyjamas at home.
“We want as many people to return to the underwriting room as possible as it is an unparalleled workplace, but we need to modernise and if allowing sweatpants is the way to do that then we will do that,” he said in a comment to this publication. The new clothing Tsar, Aprilis Asinus, is due to take up his role today and will consult with the market on whether pyjamas and dressing gowns will be the next frontier.
He said: “I think this new dress code will lower barriers of entry to the marketplace. We all know that ties are tools of upper class oppression and therefore should be outlawed entirely in favour of more comfortable egalitarian clothing.”
Sources said the move would dramatically improve wellness at the Corporation due to increased comfort.
“Just think how much easier discussions between brokers and underwriter will be now we don’t have to be constricted in restrictive blazers and suit trousers. Vive la revolution!” one source said upon hearing the news.
