Para teachers demand insurance cover before Covid duty

Ranchi: Ekikrit Para Sikshak Sangharsh Morcha (the para teachers' organisation fighting for their service regularisation and wage increment) has raised concern over the deployment of its members for Covid-19 duty and said they should be provided with insurance cover before their deployment.

The organisation said it is also ironic that the government deployed their members as magistrates when they are not considered suitable to become regular teachers. A senior member of the organisation, Sanjay Dubey, said, "On one hand, the government doesn't think that we are fit to become regular teachers but on the other, it is assigning us the task of magistrates. There are many regular teachers available with the administration."

He rued that several categories of government employees engaged on Covid duty are categorised as frontline warriors and provided with insurance cover.
Dubey added, "The family members of para teachers are left to fend for themselves whenever any mishap occurred and it will be the same if they deployed for Covid duty. Hence, the government should provide us with insurance cover for the new role we are playing. The government should also finalise the wage increment proposal."
In a recent order, the government said it is deploying para teachers as magistrates to oversee law and order, vaccination centres and public distribution systems among others. In Hazaribag, the district administration issued a notification appointing several para teachers to check e-passes and maintaining social distancing in urban and rural markets.
Earlier, the government proposed to increase the wages of para teachers from the range of Rs 12,000 per month to Rs 15,000 in the pay-scale of Rs 5,200 to Rs 20,000 per month. A total of 65,000 para teachers are engaged in various government schools of the state.
