Vehicle insurance: Mangaluru police chief clarifies on rumours

MANGALURU: The Mangaluru city police, who are now enforcing the new Motor Vehicles Act in the city, were targeted by some people over police vehicles running without valid insurance.

However, the city police chief, who was quick to notice it, issued a clarification on the same, emphasising that all government vehicles were insured by the Karnataka Government Insurance Department (KGID), and the same is not reflected on the Parivahan website.

P S Harsha, city police commissioner, told TOI that some of the rumour mongers checked about police vehicle details on Parivahan, a website of the ministry of road transport and highways. In the website, only first insurance details are uploaded, and further renewals are not available.

“Thinking it as a violation, rumour mongers took to social media to criticise the police, and the same was brought to our notice. The rumour mongers alleged that police department vehicles run on the road without insurance by availing information through the Parivahan website. However, they are unaware that KGID insures government vehicles and is not linked to the Parivahan website, hence, only initial data is available but not further renewals,” he said, adding it is the same with all state government owned vehicles.

Some people had shared details of a motorbike belonging to the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate. The 150cc motorbike was registered in 2010, and the Parivahan website shows that insurance hasn’t been renewed since 2011. Harsha, presenting the current insurance copy, said that the insurance of the vehicle is up to date.
